Landfill Trash Process To Crease, Tynes Bay Facility Back On Line Soon

Earlier today, the Acting Minister of Public Works, the Hon. Wayne Furbert, JP, MP, visited the Tynes Bay Waste Treatment Facility to receive a status update on the progress being made.

Mr. Nasir Wade, Plant Manager at Tynes Bay, briefed the Minister on the single functioning burner, the clearing of the tipping hall, the repair of the baling machine and when household waste can resume being processed at the facility.

While on site, Minister Furbert was able to see the repaired baler in action, which is currently compacting around 70 bales of trash per day, each weighing in at around 1.5 tonnes.

Minster Furbert said, “I am in awe at the speed with which the team have been able to sort and process the mountain of waste that had filled the tipping hall last week. I am confident that the team of highly skilled professionals are going above and beyond to ensure that normal operations resume at Tynes Bay. We are optimistic that the temporary landfilling will come to an end early next week.”

The Minister concluded, “Regrettably the facility missed a critical maintenance upgrade in 2014. However, the necessary infrastructure investment to create a long term solution to address Bermuda’s waste management needs is a national priority for this Government, and Cabinet has approved the necessary upgrades. Additionally, this project is a key part of Bermuda’s Economic Recovery Plan and the upgrades will be successfully executed.”

The Ministry of Public Works provide a further update on Monday.

Residents are reminded that garbage can be dropped off at Tynes Bay from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm each dayFor further information, visit the Government of Bermuda’s Garbage and Recycling page, or follow Waste Management on Facebook.
