Pembroke Woman Sentenced for Abuse of Elderly in Seniors Home

A 52-year-old Pembroke woman was sentenced yesterday in Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty of physical abusing two senior citizens at a St. George’s facility in 2021.

Wendy Haywood appeared before Magistrate Maria Sofianos and was sentenced on two separate counts of abuse. On the first count, she received nine months in prison, suspended for three years. On the second count, she was sentenced to one year in prison, also suspended for three years to run concurrently.

In addition to the suspended sentences, Haywood has been placed on the Senior’s Abuse Registry.

The charges stem from incidents involving two elderly members of a St.George’s Seniors home. During the initial trial, the staff members gave testimony detailing the abuse they witnessed at the facility.

Haywood maintained her innocence and was initially found guilty and she subsequently appealed the verdict. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction on appeal. However, sentencing was handed down yesterday.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the vulnerability of the victims and the setting in which the abuse occurred—a senior home is meant to be a place of care so one can enjoy there last days of life.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of protecting the island’s elderly population, and the inclusion of Haywood on the Senior’s Abuse Registry serves as both a consequence and a warning to others.
