The Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors celebrates the success of the 2024 ‘Zone In’ focus group sessions, an initiative that centered on the ideas and insights of Bermuda’s young people. Hosted by The Office of Youth Affairs (TOYA), these interactive sessions brought students from middle and senior schools together to share their dreams, concerns, and fresh ideas for Bermuda’s future.
“The ‘Zone In’ sessions were inspiring” shared the Hon. Tinѐe Furbert, Minister of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors. “Hearing directly from our young people—their passion, honesty, and clear vision for a better Bermuda—reminds us how bright the future can be when we listen to and include their voices.”
The sessions were more than just a conversation—they were an opportunity for students to learn about the National Youth Policy (2021) and how they can actively contribute to shaping policies that impact their lives. The feedback collected from the discussions held at seven different schools will play a key role in updating the National Youth Policy for 2026.
Schools that participated were:
- The Berkeley Institute
- Bermuda Institute
- CedarBridge Academy
- Somersfield Academy
- Dellwood Middle School
- Sandys Secondary Middle School
- Whitney Institute Middle School
“Connecting with Bermuda’s youth is at the heart of what we do,” stated Nadine Henry, Senior Youth Services and Development Officer at the Office of Youth Affairs. “Our young people shared their challenges, their hopes, and their vision for Bermuda, and we’re committed to turning those conversations into action. This is just the beginning, and we’re excited to keep empowering young people and their families through outreach like this.”
The ‘Zone In’ sessions are set to return in September and October 2025, with plans to expand and include even more schools. This year’s success has laid a solid foundation for an ongoing partnership between the Ministry, TOYA, and Bermuda’s youth.
Minister Furbert affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the work being done to foster opportunities for Bermuda’s youth to have a voice. She stated, “I want to thank every student who participated, for speaking out and sharing their thoughts so openly. You are helping us shape a better Bermuda, and for that, we are deeply grateful. You are proof that Bermuda’s future is in good hands. Let’s keep working together to make our island stronger, better, and more united for future generations.”
