New York Woman Fined for Drug Offences After Cruise Arrival in Bermuda

Hamilton, Bermuda — April 22, 2025

A 34-year-old woman from New York appeared before the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after being charged with two counts of importation and two counts of possession of illegal substances and drug-related equipment.

Marie Schmelzlen , of Fifth Avenue, New York, arrived in Bermuda aboard a cruise liner on April 20. Upon arrival, customs officers conducted a search of her cabin and discovered 10 grams of methamphetamine and cocaine, along with drug paraphernalia including two glass pipes, a black digital scale, and a gold grinder. The items were reportedly fitted for the intended use of internationally controlled substances under the U.F.A. regulations.

Schmelzlen, who traveled with a young child believed to be her own, was taken into custody. Authorities had to placed the child in the care of Bermuda’s Child and Family Services while legal proceedings had taken place.

During the court hearing, Senior Magistrate Maxine Anderson addressed the severity of the charges and emphasized the impact of drug offences on the island. “Our drug treatment facilities are full, the drug treatment court is full. We cannot turn a blind eye to these matters,” she stated firmly.

Schmelzlen was fined a total of $5,000 for the five offenses, imported and possession of the controlled drug and related equipment.
