In a second part of TNN’s story on Westgate Correctional Facility out of control with gang activity, we spoke with Inmates and corrections officers alike continue to express concern about conditions inside the Westgate Correctional Facility.
Among their fears is what they call a worsening mold condition inside the prison.
TNN understands the E1 unit has been out of commission for an extended period due to a mold infestation. Now there are reports that other units on the E block as well as C block are now facing similar issues with inmates complaining of an increase in respiratory issues among the population.
You may remember TNN earlier this week reported on an increasing number of violent incidents at Westgate. Our sources say there have been repeated calls by both inmates and staff for significant action to be taken to address this worrying trend.
At the heart of it we’re told is gang activity supposedly sparked by inmates associated gang with a gang based in the different parts of the island. There is a fear that it’s perhaps only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs.
With a significant number of inmates serving life sentences word is they have adopted an attitude that no worse can happen to them and so do not fear the consequences of their actions, engaging in violence.
TNN has reached out to Corrections senior officials about these issues and concerns but have yet to hear back from them.
