Guilty plea for man punching Police officer in the face twice in Magistrate Court

A 44 year old Devonshire man appeared in Magistrates court yesterday charged with assault on a police officer as well as resisting arrest.

Crown Council Nicole Smith, telling the court that, David Souza was spotted on the 27th of May walking in the middle of the road on Cedar Avenue. After observing the defendant’s abnormal behavior from afar, the officers approached Souza and noticed the defendant’s glossy eyes, slurred speech and his breath which smelled of alcohol.

Showing clear signs of intoxication, the two officers guided the defendant to sit on the wall. He opted to get up which is when he lost his footing and fell. One officer attempted to assist him, which is when Souza swung and punched the officer twice in the face, Crown Council Nicole Smith reading Souza’s statement indicating and I quote ” I punch you in the face and it felt good.”

 

Souza plead guilty to both offenses. Senior Magistrate Maxanne Anderson set bail to the sum $5,000 as Souza’s sentencing is due to occur on August 16th at 2:30pm.
