Gang warfare leads to State of Emergency in T&T

A state of emergency (SOE) has been declared in the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in fear of reprisal killings and the use of high powered weapons in commuting these crimes. A situation which the government stated poses a threat to the country’s national security.

Meanwhile, TNN spoke with Gary Moreno who is currently visiting his home country. When asked about the situation he told us, “Apart from the announcement, life for the average Trini is going on as normal. People are going about their business as per usual. If anything, there’s a lot of talk that this should have happened sooner.”

The SOE is expected to last 15 days with an extension of three months being sought if deemed necessary.

T&T’s acting Attorney General, Stewart Young, stated at a press conference to address the SOE, stated there would be no curfew or restrictions on public gatherings as the focus is on those engaged in criminal activity.

The SOE Regulations grant the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) enhanced powers. Under these regulations they are able to conduct searches of individuals and properties without a warrant if there is reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.

The army or, Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) has been placed on high alert with soldiers having the same powers as police, with TTDF personell being deployed to assist police.

There have been more than 620 murders in T&T so far for the year 2024. The vast majority of these gang related as rival factions attack each other. On Sunday, five people were shot dead in what has been deemed an act of retaliation for an attack on a gang leader by rivals.
