Films at BUEI continue at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) with the screening of the 2023 Dramatic Comedy, ‘American Fiction’ on Saturday, April 13th at 7:30pm in our Tradewinds Auditorium.
(Wheelchair Accessible)
While the film was written and directed by Cord Jefferson in his feature directorial debut, the story being told in ‘American Fiction’ is heavily based on a 2001 novel by Percival Everett called
“Erasure.” The story follows a frustrated novelist/professor – played by Jeffrey Wright (Shaft, Westworld, The Batman) – who is fed up with the establishment that profits from Black
entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, he writes an outlandish satire of stereotypical “Black” books under a pen name, only for this to backfire when his work is mistaken for serious literature and begins to receive critical acclaim.
This film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice
Award. ‘American Fiction’ also received the award for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 96th
Academy Awards. The stacked supporting cast for this incredible film includes Tracee Ellis Ross
(Hanging Up, Black-ish, Daddy’s Little Girls), Issa Rae (The Photograph, Vengeance, Barbie),
Sterling K. Brown (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Black Panther, Hotel Artemis), John Ortiz (Fast & Furious, American Gangster, Bumblebee), Erika Alexander (The Long Walk Home, 30 Years to Life, Get Out),
Leslie Uggams (Roots, Deadpool, Empire), Adam Brody (Jennifer’s Body, Ready or Not, Shazam!), and Keith David (The Thing, Requium for a Dream, Cloud Atlas).
The film is rated R with a runtime of 1 hour and 57 minutes. Look forward to the next installment of Films at BUEI: ‘Memory’, which will be screening Saturday, April 27th.
