While satisfied at having fulfilled his childhood dream, that of playing for Somerset in Cup Match, Jermal Proctor’s appetite remains unsatisfied.
After having his first innings at bat ended via an unfortunate run out after he had appeared in good nick, smashing three boundaries while tallying 16 runs, being called in early in the second innings when Somerset declared, and only used sparingly as a medium-pace bowler, the talented youngster hungers to play a greater role in the future.
Nevertheless, while the 18-year-old would have liked to have featured more individually, he was grateful to have been chosen to take part in what stands as Bermuda’s pre-eminent cultural and historical festival.
“It was exciting,” said Proctor, whose great-grandfather Nathaniel Proctor once captained Somerset. “I’m just happy to be here and be a part of the team’s success.
“I’m thankful to be able to enjoy the holiday and the experience of something that comes once a year, so I’m soaking it all in right now.”
Ironically Proctor’s first innings mix-up occurred while batting with one of his best mates, Dominic Sabir, who stood in his ground after running a lazy single while the former hustled for a second.
“It’s unfortunate, as I was on the charge at the time,” said Proctor, able to laugh off the matter. “I was feeling comfortable so it was unfortunate to get out.
“The second innings I was upset at being called in, but we had to win the game.
“Next year I hope to play a bigger role in the team next year, bat higher up the order, do more with the ball and be able to assert myself on the team.”
