Some of CupMatch’s oldest living legends, many of whom had not seen each other in over 60 years, came together this afternoon for a luncheon at Divots Bar and Grill, marking the inaugural event of the Former Cup Match Players and Officials Association as a registered charity.
Some cricketers present at the luncheon were Eugene “Buck” Woods, Joe Bailey, St. Claire “Brinky” Tucker, John Tucker and Sam Paynter, one of the island’s oldest living cricketers at 91 years old, just to name a few.
“ The committee has been discussing hosting this luncheon for some time, but COVID restrictions and the risk of the virus prevented it from happening; as your safety was of paramount importance,” Former Cup Match Players and Officials Association president and former Cup Match player Dean Minors said. “ The purpose of this event is to recognize you–the legacy, history and the role models of one of the most important and significant holidays in Bermuda.”
The Former Cup Match Players and Officials Association, which is an independent registered charity, aims to do three main things: assist former players and officials with health and other needs, assist upcoming cricketing prospects to further their education, and preserve the legacy of Cup Match.
The Association thanked Barry DeCouto and Harbourside Holdings for helping to sponsor the event.
