Unlicensed dogs cause Warwick man heavy fines in Magistrate Court

A 56 year old Warwick man appeared in Magistrates Court on Friday charged with eight offenses under the dog act 2008.

Philip Richardson of 18 Smiths Avenue Warwick Parish, was charged with;

(1) Causing Injury to a dog

(2) 3 counts of Keeping unlicensed dog

(3) 3 counts of dog from illegitimate source

(4) 1 count of Keeping more than two dogs without permission

Prosecutor Ms Brown, said on March 4, 2023, the Complainant was walking her dog along the Railway Trail, Warwick. When she reached that region of the Railway Trail between PHC Stadium and Hunt’s Food warehouse, she encountered the Defendant walking his own dog. As the Complainant and her dog approached, the Defendant lost control of his dog, which launched an unprovoked attack upon the Complainant’s animal.

The victim animal suffered cuts and bite wounds to the right front limb.

Following exchange of words, the Defendant left the scene of the attack, refusing to share any personal details. Nonetheless, information of a witness lead to the whereabouts of Defendant and the offending animal.

Police and Animal Control officers attended the residence of the Defendant, who was not at home at the time of Police and Wardens’ initial arrival.

However the Defendant to come onto site before the officers departed, and was cooperative with officers. He spoke of the attack incident and indicated that he took his own dog home and returned to the scene, but the Complainant had already departed.

A check of the premises gave rise to suspicion of the presence of numerous violations of the Dogs Act 2008; offences with which the Defendant is now charged. A check of records of the Department revealed no records relating to the three dogs found on his premises; not in the name of the Defendant, nor in relation to the address where they were kept.

Senior Magistrate Maxanne Anderson fine the accused close to $4000,00 in total and gave Richardson time to pay his fines.
