The Berkeley Institute was a vibrant celebration of culture, language, and international flair during its annual Foreign Language Week, held under the inspiring theme, “Languages Take You Places.” From March 24th to 28th, students and staff engaged in a week filled with exciting activities designed to spotlight the richness and relevance of world languages in today’s global society.
Each day brought something new and unforgettable:
Monday launched the festivities with a lively Foreign Language Trivia Challenge during Advisory. Students and staff tested their knowledge of French, Spanish, and international culture in a competitive, fast-paced showdown that set the tone for the week.
Tuesday transformed the Courtyard into a buzzing arena for the Language Olympics. Students rotated through a variety of games including Musical Chairs, Dominoes, a multilingual Spelling Bee, Pin the Tail, Jump Rope, and more. A surprise highlight was teachers jumping into Double Dutch and Hula Hoop challenges with gusto as they were reminded of their own childhood playtimes. It was a joyful, heartwarming sight that strengthened the school community spirit.
Wednesday offered a taste of the world with an International Food Tasting in the Upper Atrium. Students sampled mouthwatering bites from countries such as India, Grenada, Jamaica, Barbados, the Philippines, Trinidad, Guyana, and Bermuda. Special thanks are extended to Fish and Tings, House of India, Taste the Rainbow, Teaffany’s, Ms. SeminaSt. Aime, Mr. Isaac Holmes, Ms. Hyacinth Logie and Mrs. Kadisha Douglas Lee for generously sponsoring and supporting this cultural feast.
Thursday was a more immersive, reflective experience with Foreign Language Film Screenings held in French, Spanish, Filipino, and Portuguese. Students engaged with movies that entertained and inspired a deeper appreciation for the cultures behind the languages.
On Friday, the week concluded with a vibrant Cultural Fair and Fashion Show in the Courtyard. Highlights included high-energy performances of salsa, bachata, merengue, and axé; a moving recital of French poetry; a traditional piñata breaking; and a powerful performance by a student Gombey dance group. Additionally, posters inspired by the theme ‘Languages Take You Places’ were displayed in the courtyard for everyone to view and enjoy.
One of the showstoppers of the day was the “Catwalk of Cultures” Fashion Show, where students and staff donned attire from nations across the globe in a dazzling parade of color and pride. To wrap up with flair, the courtyard erupted in excitement during an Old School vs. New School Soca/Dancehall Dance-Off. Students brought fresh moves, while teachers threw it back with classic grooves. The energy was contagious.
This unforgettable week was organized by the dynamic Foreign Language Department, led by Mrs. Glemonique Grant-Edwards, with the dedication of her team, Dr. Neekaie Beckles-Clarke, Mrs. Nicola Christie-Veitch, and Mrs. Karen Holmes. Special thanks to Principal Ms. Keisha L. Douglas, the administrative team, and all staff and students whose enthusiasm made the week a resounding success.
Foreign Language Week 2025 was more than just a celebration. It was a joyful reminder that at The Berkeley Institute, languages do not just teach us how to speak, theytake us places.
