St George’s Unveils Cup Match Extravaganza Lineup – July 19th

The Corporation of St. George’s is thrilled to
announce the lineup for their annual Cup Match Extravaganza event. This year’s celebration promises exciting activities alongside beloved town favorites, sure to bring joy to all attendees.

Mayor Quinell Francis, JP, states, “We are delighted to once again host the annual Cup Match Extravangza in our historic Town of St. George.” This year’s Cup Match Extravaganza commemorates the 190th year of the emancipation of Black people from slavery in Bermuda. Mayor Francis continues, “While the Cup Match Extravaganza serves as a rally for our community, it also holds a deeper significance as a public acknowledgment of the historic cricket match it represents and the heritage of emancipation and Mary Prince.”

The Cup Match Extravaganza was originally designed as a community event to bring people together and show support for the local cricket team. The event has grown significantly, attracting a couple of thousand attendees from its humble beginnings. Town Manager Candy-Lee Foggo provides details for this year’s event, stating that they have partnered with the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce for event management and sponsorship coordination as part of the overall St. George’s Project with the
aim of increasing visitor satisfaction.

Their success with Harbour Nights is well-respected, and both entities share a strong interest in the continued success of the Town of St. George. The event will take place on July 19th, starting at 6:30 p.m., and offer free entry and free parking.

Ms. Foggo continues, “Fire Wayne will headline the event, with Power Girl and DJ Chubb serving as emcees for the respective teams, Somerset and St. George’s. Our performers’s showcase will include St. George’s Original Dancerettes, Tara Sapien Fire Dancing, Rated E, and Bermuda Dance Academy, with DJ ICEMAN giving the show its flow. We’ll have classic treats and snacks from Ashley’s, Bermuda Cup Cake Company, and Hot Dog Delights.

True Reflections and Demeka Wholesale will
also be on-site with mementos. Recognising our large resident population, we’ll have a dedicated
Fun Zone featuring SpongeBob, Rock Climb, and Slide Fun Castles for the families. For compete
details, please visit corpstgeorge.bm/cupmatch.”
Mayor Francis added, “This year, we’re excited to offer something new: the Extravaganza
competitions. The teams will be competing in mini-challenges like fishcake ball eating (sponsored by Food Hub, our town partner), ginger beer drinking (sponsored by Barritt’s, celebrating its 150th year of operation), and gombey dancing (open to attendees and cricket team members). This event will be
full of fun the entire family to enjoy.”

The Corporation is awarding an Extravaganza Trophy to the best-performing team, be it St. George’s or Somerset. Free parking will be available at Tiger Bay, We encourage families to arrive early. Town establishments will be open to cater to visitors who wish to dine and enjoy beverages.
