Scaur Hill Safety Enhancement Project Commences Tomorrow, 30 September

The Ministry of Public Works reminds the public that the project to enhance safety and stability on Scaur Hill, Sandys Parish, will commence tomorrow, Monday, 30 September 2024. The work is expected to take approximately six months to complete.

Minister of Public Works, Lt. Col. the Hon. David Burch, OBE (Mil), ED, JP, MP, stated: “The 230-foot retaining wall along Scaur Hill has been structurally undermined and urgently needs replacing.

“The existing wall, made of Bermuda stone simply stacked atop each other using an older construction method, is aged and beginning to break apart. It is not securely held in place, posing a risk to motorists and area residents.

“We are committed to rebuilding this wall much stronger and with better materials, ensuring the safety of all who use this route.

“Contrary to some beliefs, no traffic light system will exist during construction. In the past week, we had to erect temporary traffic lights in the area due to an emergency when the wall was found to be precariously held.

“These measures were necessary to ensure immediate public safety. However, the temporary traffic lights will be removed with the implementation of the one-way system on 30 September.

“I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to the homeowners in the area who have given the Government permission to construct a temporary lane through their front yards to facilitate the one-way route into the west end.

“Their cooperation has been invaluable, and we have agreed to restore their yards once the project is completed.”

The Ministry encourages the public to study the attached map showing the one-way routes to familiarise themselves with the system.

Important Information for Bus Commuters:

Please note that the project and the temporary one-way routes will result in some bus stop closures and the creation of temporary bus stops.

This information is important for area residents who rely on bus services. The attached map details the locations of the affected bus stops.

Eastbound Traffic:

  • Bus Stop ID #13 next to Ledgelets Lane will be closed and temporarily relocated along the Railway Trail near Wingood Way, also known as the Old Railway Trail stop.
  • Bus Stop ID #5 on Middle Road near the Bluebird Lane junction will also be closed. Commuters are encouraged to use the temporary Wingood Way stop.
  • Bus commuters can walk along Halt Lane/Wingood Way to access Middle Road or the Railway Trail.

Westbound Traffic:

  • The bus stops on Middle Road (shown on the map as #4 & #8) heading west will remain operational.

The Ministry apologises for any inconvenience caused during this essential work and appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation.
