The Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors is pleased to share for public consultation, a copy of its draft report – “A National Seniors Strategy, 2024-2030 – Celebrating Life and Ageing Well!” This is a first for Bermuda, fulfilling this Government’s promise to build a fairer and better Bermuda for all our seniors.
In less than two years, it is estimated that 25% of Bermuda’s population will be 65 years or older. The draft strategy is designed to address the many challenges faced by Bermuda’s aging population such as dementia, long-term care, affordable housing, safety, transportation, and health care. The draft Strategy is a result of the collaborative work carried out by Ageing and Disability Services and the Bermuda Health Council.
The National Seniors Strategy 2024-2030 envisions an inclusive Bermuda that celebrates and prepares responsibly for aging and sets out targets that will promote and facilitate ageing well for all. The National Seniors Strategy is framed by four (4) strategic pillars of progress, namely:
- Health Ageing
- Empowered Citizens
- Age-Friendly Environments
- Community
The National Seniors Strategy represents a commitment to ensuring the well-being and dignity of Bermuda’s seniors. It contains action items that aim to address the challenges and opportunities associated with Bermuda’s aging population, creating a society where seniors can thrive and continue to contribute meaningfully.
The Hon. Tinee Furbert, Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors stated, “We are proud to present Bermuda’s first-ever National Seniors Strategy, 2024-2030, which reflects our deep commitment to the well-being, dignity, and independence of our seniors. As Bermuda’s ageing population grows, we must embrace a forward-thinking, inclusive approach to address the challenges and opportunities ahead. This strategy, built on collaboration and community engagement, is a roadmap to ensure our seniors age with dignity, independence, and a high quality of life. We encourage the public to participate in this important consultation process, ensuring the strategy is relevant and impactful for our seniors, now and for future generations.”
The Ministry invites the public to review the draft Strategy between September 24th – October 18th. The National Seniors Strategy can be accessed online through the Government’s Citizen’s Forum at:
Additionally, persons can collect copies of the Strategy from the Office of Ageing and Disability Services to review and provide feedback. All feedback received during this consultation process will be carefully considered before the strategy is finalized.
The focus of the Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors is to ensure social policies and services are in place to protect, assist, inform, and empower Bermuda’s most vulnerable. The Ministry therefore encourages the public to participate in the consultation process and provide the necessary input to ensure Bermuda’s first-ever National Seniors Strategy is relevant and meaningful for Bermuda’s seniors to age well, with dignity, independence, and a good quality of life.
