Nursing Home Employees Concerned About Conditions in the Facility

Centipede and cockroach infestations, Asbestos in the ceiling paneling, Extremely poor ventilation. These are just a few of the problems that have existed for years at Lefroy House Nursing Home in Sandys, according to two workers who wish to remain anonymous and fear of losing their jobs for speaking out.

Many workers have voiced their complaints to management in the past, only to be reprimanded for speaking out. They do not believe that many, if any, of the patients’ family members know about the conditions in the facility, which happens to be over 100 years old.

“ The management [there] has no boundaries,” the workers said. “ They are all friends, no one wants to discipline or be firm with one another and are never present at meetings.”

“ [Patients’ family members] have only recently been allowed to see their loved ones again and they are only allowed to visit them for a half an hour in the lobby,” they continued. “ They are not allowed to walk through the facility or see the conditions.”

The home, which is run and operated by the Ministry of Health, has around 70 staff in total; including nurses, housekeeping, maintenance and secretaries.

“ When staff come into the building, they start coughing, sneezing and the like,” they said. “ The government can shut down one place because of some mold, but this place is infested with insects and needs to be condemned . . . we are scared to come to work [due to the conditions.]”

The facility is not only bad for patients’ and workers’ physical health and safety, but for their mental and emotional health as well.

“ The vibe in the facility is very negative; people gossip about each other and down one another all of the time, which further adds to the place breaking down,” they said.
