Not all nurses in agreement with silent protest action

In a response to nurses at BHB taking action this morning not all nurses are in agreement with the protest. It was stated it is not just nurses fighting for pay increases it’s all BPUS staff are BHB.

BIU staff have received COLA  in 2022/2023 and 2023/24. But  BPSU staff, have not received anything in almost seven years.

A group of local nurses expressed concerns to Trevor Lindsay, stating that some of their colleagues may have ulterior motives.

“Basically, I believe there are a group of nurses that are planning to leave before their contracts end so that they can get into the United States before the immigration rules change in America by the Trump administration. They want their money before that. They don’t care about anything else in the collective bargaining agreement; they only care about the money.”

These nurses pointed out that while the protesting nurses highlight their efforts during COVID-19, we all received benefits during that period. “We were given cars to rent at very reduced rates, free bus rides, first place at the laundry, first place at the grocery stores, and constant food deliveries. And while other hospital employees took a pay cut, BPSU nurses and staff did not.”

The silent protest, which includes signs placed around east broadway roundabout, is the first phase of their action. “We hope it does not progress any further,” a nurse noted. “This is the only hospital in Bermuda. We cannot afford for it to close. But we need Bermuda to understand that it is just one hospital, and we are being stretched beyond our limits.”

While nurses, as essential service providers, cannot strike outright, they can give notice of planned marches or demonstrations. “We are within our rights to give a 30-day notice to march, or a 21-day notification for other actions,” one nurse confirmed.

As the silent protest continues, the nurses remain hopeful that their voices will finally be heard. Their next steps will depend on the response from hospital administrators and government officials. In the meantime, the signs at Crowlane serve as a stark reminder of their struggle—a struggle they say is no longer silent.
