MSA High School Opportunities Prepare Graduates for Future Success

MSA is celebrating the achievements of its graduating class of 2023, in which all 27 students graduated and 26 have been accepted into tertiary education programs.

Of the 27 graduates, 22 will continue their education overseas. Fifteen students will attend university in
Canada, five will go to school in the US, two will go to the UK, and one will attend Study Afloat. Four students will attend Bermuda College and the remaining student will take a gap year before pursuing further education.

As a strong academic year, this graduating class attained the highest number of entrance scholarships.
The class collectively earned $289.5K in entrance scholarship funds from their universities, which included
Nova Southeastern University, Dalhousie University, New England Institute of Technology, Sheridan College, Trent University, King’s University College, and Ontario Tech University.

“While we are still awaiting the results of the Alberta exams and the local scholarship awards, we can
certainly speak to the accomplishments that these students have already attained,” stated MSA Principal,
Anna Faria-Machado. “We are incredibly proud of these students as they begin the next phase of their.education. Many of these students are graduating as members of the National Honor Society,
demonstrating not only high academic achievement, but also service, leadership and character.”

This is the first group of students to sit the full Alberta exams since 2020. The Alberta curriculum is internationally recognized as one of the best education systems in the world and the standardized testing in Grade 12 shows how each student is meeting the learning objectives in relation to provincial standards.

“MSA first received accreditation from Alberta Education in 2013,” stated Mrs. Machado. “One decade later, we are thrilled to see our students continue to thrive within this curriculum and we eagerly anticipate the results of the Alberta exams.”

This cohort has also benefitted from the recent introduction of MSA’s new financial management course..As part of the financial management course, students participated in unpaid internships at established businesses to gain valuable work experience and career direction.

In the rainiest graduation in recent memory, Valedictorian, Ian Da Silva, joined Salutatorian, Kyra King, to
address the graduating class. At the students’ request, Patrina O’Connor-Paynter, aka PowerGirl Trina,
gave an inspirational and motivational message as the guest speaker.

“Thanks to the foundation we have been given by teachers, friends, family, and faith alike, we are now given the opportunity to begin our futures,” stated Mr. Da Silva.

“Over the past 13 years we have grown not only as a class together, but as individuals. Within the walls of MSA, we have created our own identities and have become more than friends; we are a family!” stated Ms. King. “Our bond is not based on how long we’ve been together, it’s based on our ability to connect with each other, push past our differences and celebrate each other’s successes and the different experiences we’ve had.”

The graduates are studying a variety of fields, including commerce, diagnostic radiography, biology, kinesiology, and education.
