A male visitor has died at the Horseshoe Bay Beach after attempting to assist another swimmer in difficulty in the ocean.
TNN News spoke with two individuals that work on the beach stating “If it was not for the heroic efforts of three of our team members and an unknown female member of the public it would have been a lot worst here today. Mr. Tahj Bell, Cairo Smith and Mr. Zackai Cann, Both of whom are on duly in charge of Beach Operations. The staff are trained to watch all beach goers while enjoying the sand and or water.
The Bermuda Police Service issued a statement on the mishap, “Shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 27 March 2024, Police received a report of persons in difficulty in the water at Horseshoe Bay.”
Police, Emergency Medical Services and Coastguard personnel were dispatched to scene.
Upon arrival, officers established there were three persons, all visitors to the island, requiring assistance.
Information provided indicates a child got into difficulty while in the water and a male went to her assistance.
However, he too got into difficulty and became in need of help.
A woman then entered the water and was able to get both the child and the male out.
Life-saving efforts commenced immediately once the male who was unresponsive was out of the water.
He was transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH), where sadly, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The young child was alert. She was taken in another ambulance to KEMH for medical assessment.
