Seven community organisations were awarded monetary grants from the Bermuda Government’s Confiscated Assets and Capital Development Grant Programme.
Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP, presented cheques to sports and community clubs, totalling $175,000 to assist with essential upgrades to their facilities, purchase new equipment and support youth programmes.
The initiative is in keeping with the Government’s commitment to supporting community organisations and projects which get Bermudians back to work.
The following community organisations received grants:
Bermuda Bowling Club was awarded $12,500. The Club was awarded a grant from the confiscated asset fund to assist youth programmes.
Paddle with Purpose was awarded $12,500. The Club was awarded a grant from the confiscated assets fund to support their youth programme.
Hamilton Parish Workman’s Club received $25,000 from the Capital Development Fund to assist with upgrades of their club exterior.
Devonshire Recreation Club received $25,000 from the Capital Development Fund to assist with landscaping and upgrades to public restrooms.
Harrington Workmen’s Club received $25,000 from the Capital Development Fund to assist with the completion of full renovations to their clubhouse.
Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club received $50,000 from the Capital Development Fund to assist with the installation of new fencing, a new synthetic practice wicket, and new training equipment.
Leopard’s Club received $25,000 to assist with upgrades to their flooring.
Premier Burt said: “In our 2020 Election Platform, the Government recognised that community development and sport play an important role in bringing Bermudians together.
“We believe it is essential to continue the Capital Development Grant Programme and extend support to our deserving local community and sporting organisations that play an invaluable role in our country and are cornerstones of community and culture.
“The impact of the pandemic forced many clubs to suspend their community outreach programmes, while limited funds hindered much-needed improvements to their facilities.
“As we move beyond the pandemic, the financial resources awarded today from the Confiscated Assets Fund will support youth programmes, and the Capital Development grants will assist clubs in upgrading their facilities and purchasing new equipment while also continuing to help get more Bermudians back to work.”
This past weekend the Premier attended the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for Harrington’s Workman’s club after two of extensive renovations. The Devil’s Hole Club received $125,000 in Capital Development Grants from the Government including the $25,000 they received at Friday’s presentation.
This support allowed them to fully renovate their clubhouse, including the building of a new family-friendly meeting area for the community, separate from their bar.
The Capital Development Grants have assisted other clubs with the installation of new roofing and flooring, installing new fencing, renovation of public bathrooms, upgrading electrical infrastructure and purchasing new maintenance equipment.
A total of $1,032,122 for capital development assistance has been awarded to 22 local community clubs to date, with $149,500 made available from the Confiscated Asset Fund to support youth programmes at 12 organisations.
