Flag Invasion Invades Carnival Weekend

This Friday, June 14th, fifteen renowned entertainers will take to the stage for what promises to be an incredible evening to remember. Taking place at the historic Fort St. Catherine in St. George’s, seven time ‘Best of Bermuda’ award winner, DJ Rusty G, presents the ninth annual Flag Invasion.

Originally launched in 2015 by Russell GriMith and Jason Sukdeo, Flag Invasion started oM as a soca event at the Docksiders Pub and Restaurant and by the second year, it had expanded to include two stages – soca and dancehall/reggae. The two-in-one event was the first of its kind for Bermuda, moving to Pier Six as it grew to a three-stage event and ultimately expanding to a full sunset festival at its current staple location of Fort St. Catherine.

Until now, Flag Invasion always took place on the third Saturday of the month of May, typically a week before the Bermuda Day holiday. However, over the past few years, with the restructure of the Carnival in Bermuda weekend, Carnival Friday was lacking a signature Soca-focussed event.

Rusty G plans to close that gap. “In the past, the Five Star Friday event was essentially the oMicial start to Carnival Weekend here in Bermuda. With that no longer happening, it seemed like a soca element was missing on the Friday evening, so I decided to take a chance on moving Flag Invasion to Carnival Friday. It just made sense.’, said Rusty G.

This year, patrons will be treated to four stages: The Soca Kingdom, The Irie Jungle, Rap City and The Silent Observatory, playing Soca, Dancehall/Reggae, Hip-Hop/R&B and various genres, respectively. Performers include Bermudian DJs Rusty G, DJ iBreeze, DJ Mystro, Mista Genius, Jim Brown, Fresh Kidd, DJ Fury, Dat Bie Dez as well as international acts, Selectah Kerry (Trinidad), Dutty Dex (Miami), DJ Sinistar (Miami), Tony X (New York) and Jester (Toronto). There will be special performances by Bermudian artists Fire Wayne and Ponaflex as well as other new surprises.

Rusty G has played a big role over the years in building the music scene and culture in Bermuda, throwing events, producing music and developing Bermudian artists such as Fire Wayne and Mr. Foto, to name a few. Now also part owner of radio station, Irie 98.3 FM, Rusty G uses all his platforms to showcase and provide opportunities for Bermudian talent.

Flag Invasion will begin at 6pm on Friday with tickets available for purchase on BDAtix.com. Drink tickets can also be pre-purchased online to avoid waiting in queues at the event. Parking for the event is available at East End Primary School, with complimentary shuttle service available to and from the event.
