Gavin Carter Staff Officer of The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service provided an update to the Community concerning the (ongoing) fire incident located at the Airport Waste Management Facility at L. F. Wade International Airport.
At (6:08pm) a call for service came in to the BFRS Dispatch call center reporting that flames were visible at the airport dump. Fire Service vehicles from the Clearwater Station were dispatched. Upon arrival an area approximately 100 x100 was found fully involved.
A total of nine (9) BFRS vehicles were dispatched in response to this incident.
We recognize that many in the surrounding community have observed the flames at the dump and have possibly been affected to some degree by this event and are interested in understanding the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
The safety and well-being of the community remain our utmost priority. Despite the appearance of the flames, the public can rest assured that the blaze is under control.
We would like to express our gratitude for the swift response of both the Structural and Airport Operations Divisions whose efforts helped minimize and control the spread of the fire.
Fire operations continue, to ensure the mitigation of fire spread and to protect any surrounding exposures.
No forensic fire investigation will commence until there is a complete extinguishment of the fire.
We are mindful of the interest in specific details however we will provide updates when are in a position to do so.
We appreciate the understanding and patience of the community as we work through this complex incident.
