Bermuda residents prepared if a major hurricane was to hit the Island according to Narrative Research Bermuda

As the 2023 hurricane season has started, Bermuda residents are gearing up to protect their homes from potential damage. The season lasts from June to November and forecasters are now predicting an “above normal” hurricane season as ocean temperatures hit record highs.

We asked Bermuda residents how personally prepared they felt they were if a major hurricane was to hit Bermuda. Overall, eight in ten residents indicate they feel prepared (82%) if a hurricane were to hit, with one in six reporting they feel completely prepared (16%). Only one in ten (10%) feel unprepared and fewer than ten percent report it would depend on how severe the hurricane is (7%). Compared to last year, a similar number of residents indicate they are prepared (up 4 points from 2022).

Across demographics, residents 18-34 years of age are least likely to feel prepared for a major hurricane compared to those who are older. Additionally, white residents are more likely to feel prepared as opposed to black residents. Further, women are more likely to report that it depends on how severe the hurricane is compared to men.

These results reflect opinions of 210 adult Bermuda residents (18 years or age or older), conducted from June 8th and June 19th, 2023. The questions are not commissioned by a third party and were collected independently by Narrative Research Bermuda. The results were collected from Narrative Research Bermuda’s proprietary online panel of adult residents, Bermuda Voice.
