Bermuda Airport Authority Weather Radar Remains Out of Service

The Bermuda Weather Service (www.weather.bm) weather radar remains unavailable due to a technical fault.

The weather radar went offline on Sunday 6 October 2024. Bermuda Airport Authority’s engineering technicians continue to work closely with the manufacturer, Leonardo Germany GmbH, to rectify the issue.

The Authority’s local technicians have so far identified and replaced two faulty parts, solving part of the problem. However, ongoing troubleshooting continues in an effort to completely resolve the technical issues and to bring the weather radar back online. Leonardo is a leading manufacturer of weather radar systems and Bermuda’s weather radar is maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and with their support, including on-site support when required.

The Authority has prioritized and escalated its resources by arranging for Leornardo engineers to travel to Bermuda to conduct a full assessment and to aid in the repair of the weather radar system. This process could take several weeks resulting in the weather radar system being offline until mid- November 2024.

The weather radar system was commissioned in October 2019, and it is about a third of the way through its 15-year lifecycle. Excluding planned, preventative maintenance, the weather radar system’s availability has been 96.7% since commissioning.

While it is not ideal for the weather radar to be off-line, the radar is only one part of a suite of tools used by the Bermuda Weather Service, who will continue to provide alternative graphics including satellite visuals, and a full range of weather products and services, including aviation, public weather and associated watches, warnings and advisories. It is important to note that this outage will not impact aviation safety.

The Airport Authority would like to thank the public for their patience as our engineering technicians and the manufacturer work toward a solution. Please direct any inquiries regarding the weather radar to info@airportauthority.bm
