On Friday February 11, staff at BELCO packed over a thousand grocery bags full of food for needy families. Around 100 volunteers helped distribute the bags earlier this afternoon.
“ It is a fantastic feeling to give back to our community,” BELCO Managing Director of Transmission, Retail and Distribution Michelle Leman said. “ It is difficult to see our brothers and sisters going hungry, so we at BELCO just want to help people out and give back.”
The bags contained, among other things, cereal, rice, canned goods and some soft drinks. They even put together bags for children.
“ [ BELCO and Liberty Group] have seen the need within our community and the struggle within Bermuda as a whole,” Liberty Group Director of IT Zim Khan added. “ The message here is let’s not wait until once a year to do this. Let’s use every day as an opportunity to help our people.”
Mr. Khan truly understands the desperate financial situations that Bermudians are in and believes that this giveaway is a step in the right direction between what people might perceive from a BELCO perspective vs. what actually is the case.
“ This is something that we did last year, but we help out within the community all year round,” Ms. Leman said. “ We clean up certain areas, we go to WindReach and other charities, our initiative is to give back wherever and whenever we can.”
