BELCO Managing Director Shelly Leman said: “Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO) today advised that the Company is prepared for any potential impact from the Hurricane Milton and encouraged residents to also prepare for the storm.
BELCO’s operations teams have met to coordinate preparations ahead of possible impacts from Hurricane Milton and will continue to meet frequently until the storm threat has passed.
The public can get storm preparedness advice, safety tips and updates on any outages on BELCO’s website and social media pages, inclusive of Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Youtube and Instagram.
Due to the amount of overgrown vegetation and recent wet weather causing vegetation to be heavy and hang close to BELCO wires, outages may occur if there are high winds. Year-round vegetation management by property owners is critical to ensuring minimal outages during storms.
While the time for arranging a scheduled power outage with BELCO for property owners to trim their trees prior to Milton’s arrival has passed, customers are reminded that one of the most important actions residents can take to prepare for a storm is to ensure that trees on their property are clear of power lines. Ensuring that vegetation on private property remains10 feet away from power lines is the sole responsibility of property owners. Property owners can call (295-5111) or email (treetrimming@belco.bm) three weeks in advance to schedule a power shutdown in order to trim safely.”
BELCO President Wayne Caines said: “BELCO is monitoring the track of Hurricane Milton and thankfully the storm has weakened and is forecast to weaken further to a post-tropical low and pass to our south during Friday and into the weekend. However, forecasts can and do change, so we remain vigilant at BELCO and prepared for any damage the storm may cause. I encourage all residents and businesses in Bermuda to review their own hurricane safety plans as well as tips and advice on the BELCO website and social media channels to keep their family and property safe should we be impacted by this storm.”
