Yesterday, at the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) headquarters, Alexa Lightbourne was officially announced as the candidate for Constituency 14 in the upcoming general election. She replaces Wayne Caines, who recently stepped down from the position.
In an interview with Trevor Lindsay, Alexa shared her thoughts on stepping into this role and her vision for serving the people of Constituency 14.
When asked how she plans to engage with the community, Alexa stated, “I look forward to engaging further with the residents and constituents of Constituency 14. I’ve already heard some of their concerns on the doorstep, and I will bring my most authentic self—a self that includes a record of service in various capacities, both personally and professionally. I don’t think that will change as I continue to seek ways to serve them.”
During the interview, Alexa reflected on the influence of her grandfather, Willard Lightbourne, a well-known figure in Pembroke. She shared, “He was a customs officer with a 9-to-5 job but still chose to cut hair to meet the needs of his community. He used his skills and talents to serve his village, and that has inspired me to do the same—offering my abilities to best represent the people of Constituency 14.”
On the topic of addressing issues affecting young black men, Alexa emphasized inclusivity, stating, “Young black men are an integral part of our community. While women’s issues are often highlighted, they are national issues that impact everyone. Every young black man has a mother, a sister, or a daughter, and their concerns are just as important. I aim to understand their unique challenges and ensure they are represented fully. They are absolutely not left out.”
When asked why voters should cast their ballots for her, Alexa said, “I am an authentically service-driven individual, known for getting the job done. That won’t change as a candidate or, should I be successful, as a representative.”
Finally, Trevor Lindsay noted Alexa’s transition from working behind the scenes in various PLP roles to taking center stage as a candidate. Alexa described it as a natural evolution: “I’ve redefined what service means for me. It’s about answering a call to serve, not being confined to one role. I am stepping up to support my party and the people of Bermuda as we present our vision for the future.”
Alexa Lightbourne’s candidacy marks a new chapter for Constituency 14, as she brings a blend of personal passion and professional experience to the forefront.
