Weekes Discusses Violence Epidemic
It has been just over one month since the Honorable Michael Weekes was appointed National Security Minister, and since that appointment, two young men were murdered days apart from
one another and another young man’s lifeless body was discovered this afternoon at a St. George’s golf course.
Minister Weekes believes that, in order to tackle and address this violence epidemic, we must come together and ask the difficult questions: where are the father figures, where are the family
units, the church units, etc., to help steer young black men in the right path.
“ Gone are the days where we can point fingers at the Government and ask the Government what they are going to do; what are we going to do to save our men,” Minister Weekes said.
“ A lot of times, when these horrific murders occur, we forget about the families after a couple of months. We have to stay connected on every level, because the effect of [ gun and knife
murders] does not go away. It’s our job to provide grief counseling to these families.”
Minister Weekes, who is very religious, claims that prayer has certainly helped him cope throughout his first few weeks as minister. He is willing to work with and hear from anyone and everyone in the community to find solutions to these critical problems.
