At Victor Scott field 12 years ago, 24-year-old Kimwandae Walker was shot dead in front of children and families during Good Friday celebrations.
“ Yesterday, Boulevard Blazers Community Club carries the torch for Kimwandae Walker, one of our club’s great members, as well as for the rest of the fallen soldiers,” club president Deaz
Chambers said.
The club hosted Good Friday celebrations yesterday, featuring kite flying and a friendly afternoon football game between the old and younger club members. Mr. Chambers believes
that, even with all the violence and madness going on right now, the community clubs need to
provide some sense of hope to the community, especially for the children.
“ Today is about the youth, good vibes and good spirits. It’s really special seeing the community come back out like this and I did not picture this turnout to be as big as it is today,” Mr. Chambers said.
He is optimistic and hopeful about the team’s upcoming season and says that they plan to stabilize themselves and play the best that they can. They also have fun-filled summer events
lined up for the community.
“ Last year, we had a few charity organizations do things around the community, so we want to come back with more of those kinds of things,” he said. “ It’s all about growth and making more [meaningful] connections with our community.”
