The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the second suspected case which was under investigation is now confirmed as measles. Identified close contacts are being notified of this case update and all necessary precautions are being implemented.
As a reminder, measles symptoms initially include fever, fatigue, cough, runny nose, sore red eyes, and a rash that starts on the face and spreads. If you suspect measles or have been exposed, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
To protect against measles, ensure you and your family are up to date on the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Children should receive doses at 12–15 months and again at 4–6 years. Adults born after 1957 who lack immunity should verify they’ve had two MMR doses at least four weeks apart. Vaccinations are available at local GP offices or the Hamilton Health Centre.
Vaccination clinics are available at the Hamilton Health Centre for those needing their MMR vaccine.
- November 25–29: Mon–Fri, 4:00–6:00 PM
- December 2–6: Mon–Fri, 4:00–6:00 PM
Clinics are for those aged 12 months and older who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Individuals under isolation due to exposure should wait until cleared before attending.
Minister of Health Kim Wilson emphasizes the importance of vaccination to protect against this highly contagious disease, which can cause severe complications like pneumonia and brain swelling, “Ensuring vaccinations are up to date is critical to safeguarding the health of our community. I urge everyone to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their families against this highly contagious disease, which remains common in parts of the world.”
Residents are strongly encouraged to take advantage of these clinics. For more information or to address concerns about measles or the MMR vaccine, contact your doctor or the Hamilton Health Centre at 444-0720.
