Op-Ed: TNN News Stands by Its Mission to Report Facts, Not Fiction
By Trevor Lindsay, Editor, TNN News
At TNN News, our mission has always been clear: to deliver the facts. We are a news outlet that reports on the realities presented in court, at a crime scene or road traffic accident resulting in death, a shooting in any neighborhood and other verified sources, not a platform for fabricating stories. Let me make this abundantly clear: we do not create the news; we report it.
When we cover court proceedings, the information we share comes directly from what is presented in court—the charges, evidence, testimonies, and verdicts. These are not opinions or conjectures; they are the facts as laid out in a public legal forum. If someone is tried and found guilty—or pleads guilty—for a crime, it is not TNN that committed the act. It is not our reporters who caused harm. We are simply the messengers, ensuring the public is informed.
Yet, time and again, we see misplaced outrage. Instead of confronting the harsh truths about the actions of an individual or the consequences of their choices, some choose to direct their anger at the media. Why is that? Why attack the organization or the reporters who are simply doing their jobs?
My question to the general public is this: why not direct that energy toward the real issue at hand? Why not focus on the person who committed the crime, on the harm they caused, and on the pain they brought to others? Why is it easier to blame the outlet shining a light on the truth than to accept the reality of the situation?
Accountability is a cornerstone of any functioning society. It is time for those affected by these stories to take ownership of their realities. If a family member has committed a crime, no amount of finger-pointing at the press will change that fact. Acceptance, responsibility, and introspection are what lead to healing and progress—not lashing out at the messenger.
TNN News will continue to report the facts, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable they may be. We understand the weight of our responsibility, and we take it seriously. Our commitment is to truth, transparency, and the public’s right to know.
If you disagree with the story, it is not because we created it—it is because someone committed the act, and the justice system addressed it. Deal with that reality, not with us.
