Jordan DeSilva, the captain of Somerset Cricket Club and a three-time winner of Cup Match, has announced his decision to step down from his role at the end of the season.
During Friday night’s prize presentation at the west end club, DeSilva expressed gratitude while also stating that he would not be retiring from cricket and could potentially make himself available for team selection if deemed worthy.
His announcement follows head coach Jeff Richardson’s recent revelation that next year will be his last in charge, with former star player Janeiro Tucker set to take over as “coach in waiting.”
As a veteran left-arm medium-pace bowler and middle to late order batsman, DeSilva led Somerset to victory three times during his tenure and believed he had done all he could as the head man.
He took over in 2017 following Jekon Edness’ departure and has never lost a mid-summer spectacle, winning two Cup Match events by ten wickets, to go with an innings triumph during his second year in charge .
It is customary for Somerset to install new captains at home games, but it remains unclear who they will promote and whether the next skipper will be someone already within their league set-up or draw from outside the club.
Terryn Fray has served as DeSilva’s vice-captain at Cup Match for several years while Greg Maybury occupied a similar role for the club side before being dropped this year.
