The Ministry of Public Works and Environment has commenced essential upgrade work on the Bailey Bridge portion of the Causeway in St. George’s.
Crews began work this past Saturday and continued through Sunday, with progress already at the halfway mark. The Ministry’s teams are replacing the bridge’s deck panels to enhance safety and improve the structure’s overall durability.
The eastbound lane has already been completed, and work is now focused on the westbound lane. Full completion of the current phase is expected within the coming week, weather permitting.
The newly installed panels are designed to last approximately 10 to 15 years and include the same anti-skid surface coating as the previous ones, ensuring traction for vehicles in wet weather conditions.
The Bailey Bridge has experienced natural wear over time, and these works are being carried out to ensure continued safety, reliability, and peace of mind for all who use the Causeway.
Minister of Public Works and Environment, the Hon. Jache Adams, JP, MP, underscored the significance of the project, stating, “This is a key infrastructure improvement that speaks to our commitment to public safety and long-term planning.
“The Bailey Bridge is a vital link for the east end, and ensuring its structural integrity is a top priority for the Government.”
Minister Adams continued, “We understand how important this route is for daily commuters and emergency services. Our teams have worked efficiently to complete the eastbound lane, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we move ahead with the westbound side.”
The Ministry also plans to replace the bridge’s steel member components, which provide key structural support. This future work will not require any lane closures.
Minister Adams added, “We are not just addressing immediate needs— the public will see that we are making smart, forward-thinking upgrades that will serve the public well into the future.”
