A few weeks before celebrating her 46th birthday, Shaquita Parsons had decided that she wanted to give back to the community in some way, but was unsure about what exactly to do.
“I care a lot about senior citizens, and I have a lot of friends who are seniors. So, we decided to visit them at a few rest homes for my birthday,” Ms. Parsons said.
That is just what she and a couple of her friends did on Saturday, May 15; visiting and bringing gift baskets to 54 seniors.
“ As we were brainstorming [on what to give the seniors], we decided to ask the resthomes what big-ticket items they might be in need of,” she said. “ I would pay for and supply the gift bags and the money that people give would go towards those big-ticket items for the rest homes.”
Once calling a few of the homes, Packwood Home in Sandys expressed a need for a wheelchair and a reclining chair and Lorraine Rest home in Warwick requested a 55-inch TV and washer or dryer.
“I did not reach out to any businesses for sponsorship during this endeavor at all,” Ms. Parsons said.
She was really glad that she got to provide joy to people in what is a joyless time for a so
“It felt really good to just see the excitement on the management at the rest homes’ faces as well, we even put gift bags together for the caregivers; they received soap and skin creams and everyone got some banana bread, gingerbread, cookies and each home received a birthday cake,” she said.
After helping his mom out, Ms. Parson’s 20-year-old son Quiluan told her that he wants to do something similar for his next birthday.
Ms. Parsons would like to thank her entire team for all their hard work and time and acknowledges that she could not have done this alone.
Some of the people that she would like to thank include her son, her best friends Nikara and Sasha, cousin Cheryl who baked the cookies, cousin Felica from Day. Rofia who donated the soap and Michelle from Lovingly Made who donated the skin cream, to name just a few.
