Westgate Inmates Stage Sit-In Over Ongoing Water Crisis

BREAKING NEWS

TNN News understands that inmates at the Westgate Correctional Facility have staged a sit-in, refusing to carry out most of their assigned work duties as frustration continues to mount over the facility’s ongoing water shortage.

According to information reaching TNN, only two areas of inmate work are currently continuing — the canteen and the laundry.

Other inmate work assignments, including the kitchen, grounds maintenance, cleaning of offices and the visiting area, have reportedly come to a halt.

The kitchen shutdown is particularly significant, as inmates normally play an important role in preparing meals for the prison population. TNN understands that, as a result of the work stoppage, a catering service has had to bring food into the facility to feed inmates.

The action comes amid continuing complaints over the lack of reliable running water at Westgate.

TNN has been reporting on the water crisis at the correctional facility for several days, with inmates and correctional staff reportedly experiencing repeated interruptions to the water supply.

TNN understands that a major issue believed to be contributing to the problem involves a large damaged or exposed pipe outside the kitchen area, which has reportedly resulted in significant water-related problems within the facility.

The situation inside the units is also raising concerns.

According to information received by TNN, some showers are reportedly not functioning properly, with inmates allegedly having to use pliers to turn the water supply on and off because the normal shower faucets are not operational.

TNN also understands that some inmates have resorted to using water hoses outside their units to wash themselves and cool down, amid the continuing problems with the showers and water supply.

The growing frustration has now reportedly resulted in inmates calling for direct intervention from the Commissioner of Corrections and Assistant Commissioner.

TNN understands that some inmates feel that senior prison management has not adequately communicated with them about the situation, with complaints that the Commissioner does not regularly come into the units to speak directly with inmates.

The central question being raised by inmates is how long they are expected to live and work under these conditions.

When will the Government intervene and fully investigate the continuing water problems at Westgate Correctional Facility — including the reported pipe damage and the condition of the facility’s plumbing infrastructure?

TNN News continues to seek clarification from the Department of Corrections and the responsible Government authorities regarding the reported work stoppage, the catering arrangements, the condition of the showers and the cause and expected resolution of the ongoing water crisis.

TNN News understands that this situation remains ongoing. Further updates will follow as information becomes available.
