Westgate Correctional Facility in turmoil over the hiring a former Inmate

Prison officers at Westgate Correctional Facility in Dockyard are irate regarding the hiring of a former inmate as a new corrections officer at the very place he was once imprisoned for six months.

TNN understands the man to be a 37-year-old local, who also has two drunk driving convictions, one in 2016 and another in 2018. During the latter instance of his being caught driving impaired had him impatiently honk his horn before overtaking a police car and later be stopped, booked and held by police.

His incarceration is believed top have stemmed from another matter, however such traversing of Bermuda’s laws generally precludes being allowed to serve in law enforcement positions, such as police, customs, prisons and fire services.

Comparing the move as a literal instance of deliberately allowing an “inmate run the asylum”, Speaking directly regarding there having knowledge of the new officer as an ex-convict, the source explained that the service well would have had to be aware, as the man has a prisoner identification number 06209 on file dating back to March 26th 2013.

“He has a prison number,” said the source. “All of them went down to intake and saw that this guy already had a prison number.

“The officers are all angry at this man with a prison number, getting a prison officer’s job.”

The source fingered Commissioner of Prisons Keeva Joell-Benjamin, in which there has been several votes of No Confidence, accusing the prison boss of administering a double-standard that appears to alledged favour certain people.

“We have a particular female officer that takes several leave of absence a year, is always in trouble, getting caught on video with a cell phone in the unit still employed.”

Our source identify officers being fired on the other hand, or asked to resign over cell phones incident, the possession of which are a particular problem the institution is supposed to be attempting to better enforce, hence officers not being allowed to take them, into the units.

“Many other officers have been caught and lost their jobs, but this one particular female officer allowed to keep her job,” said the source, adding that the officer has been placed on charge in advance of a hearing.

The E1 unit has been closed for three years for what is believed to be upgrade and maintenance, with electrical problems. The place is a mess and we can’t work in this facility anymore in this condition.
