The 2022 Commonwealth Games are set to kick off later this week in Birmingham, England. And recently the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr. Ernest Peets met with the Bermuda Team to wish them well, as they prepare to represent the island on the world sports stage. Following the meeting, Minister Peets shared a public message of support.
On July 28, several of Bermuda’s finest athletes will participate in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which are set to take place in Birmingham, England.
These athletes will be representing our flag in a range of sports; from our triathlete team led by our Olympic Gold Medallist Dame Flora Duffy; to our track and field team that includes Jah-Nhai Perinchief and Sakari Famous; as well as our swimmers including Emma Harvey, and other incredibly talented team members. And I have no doubt that whatever the outcome, they will make our country proud.
International sporting events like Birmingham 2022 are important for our country. The Commonwealth Games will offer this amazing team a chance to demonstrate to the world that Bermudians are known for punching above our weight and inspiring others.
Birmingham 2022 will also represent the first Commonwealth Games to take place since the pandemic. And because of this, I know that our athletes will be keen to show off their talent and flair for the world to see.
As the opening ceremony kicks off, I want to encourage all residents to support all of our athletes by following the coverage and by sending them messages of support. Let’s get behind our team and show them what we’re made of!
On behalf of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport, I wish our Commonwealth Team nothing but success as they represent Bermuda at these prestigious games.
