Wayne Caines will he run or will he step down from politics

Speculation rife today that the Progressive Labour Party may have to field a new candidate in Constituency #14 , Devonshire North West.

This as it is rumoured the incumbent, Wayne Caines a former Minister of National Security may not be contesting the seat come the general election to be held on February 18th this year.

Mr. Caines was first elected to the House of Assembly in 2017 and was re-elected to that seat in the 2020 national poll.

He served as Minister of National Security from 2017 to 2020, when he was asked by Premier David Burt to resign, after he and then fellow Minister Zane DeSilva allegedly breached COVID regulations during their involvement in a gathering that was purportedly held to raise funds for the Meals on Wheels Charity.

That same year Mr. Caines was appointed Chairman of the Bermuda Tourism Authority. He was also that year named as President of Ascendant, the parent company of local electricity generation company, BELCO.

Who will replace Mr. Caines if he in fact does decide not to run in the next general election, is anyone’s guess. Among the names already being mentioned as his replacement, is Attorney General, Kim Wilkerson. Whether that does prove to be the case, only time will tell.

TNN News has made several attempts to reach Mr Caines to no avail.
