Warwick Worken’s Club dismissed as rumour PHC’s challenge for their Western Counties Cup crown on Saturday, dismantling their parish neighbours with consummate ease, as they strolled to a 139-run victory at White Hill Field.
Laying the path to victory was veteran Kamau Leverock, who produced stirring displays with both bat and ball, as he anchored the champions’ innings with a well-crafted century, before ripping through PHC’s middle order, claiming a team best three for 52.
PHC won the toss and elected to bowl on what turned out to be a strip perfect for batting and were made to pay the price from the outset as Malachi Jones [40] and Luke Fulton [17] put on 62 runs for the first wicket, before the latter fell lbw to Sage Carter.
However, the dismissal proved to be a case addition by subtraction, as Leverock entered the fray, and proceeded to methodically go through the gears on his way to 101 from 79 balls.
Leverock and Jamar Stovell’s [25] fourth wicket partnership of 118, which ended with the latter skying a catch to Parth Kanwar, essentially put matters beyond PHC’s reach. Ajani Lee’s [52] half century heaped further misery to what was destined to be a fruitless chase.
Turning to bat PHC soon found themselves in difficulty as openers Dionte Dowling [4] and Ori Wilson [18] fell cheaply.
Guest player Jan-Johan Nel attempted to singularly mount a challenge batting at No 3, performing admirably scoring 81 from 78 balls, while engaging in a 67-run third-wicket partnership with Sage Carter [29].
Nevertheless, such was not enough, as Nel found no others to offer substantial support, with PHC being bundled out for 189.
Warwick will next face Southampton Rangers in the second round of the competition on July 11.
