Vote for The Great Christmas Carol-Off-Skyport People’s Choice Award

Skyport has issued a reminder to the general public that voting for the People’s Choice Award of the Great Bermuda Carol-Off ends this weekend, on Sunday December 31 by 5pm ADT. 

The Great Bermuda Carol-Off took place at the LF Wade International Airport in December pitting choirs and bands from 15 schools in a festive competition for four prizes totalling over $13,000. Operators of the airport have created a festive environment at the terminal which boasts Bermuda’s Biggest Christmas Tree, and is vying for the title of Most Christmassy AIrport in the World. Over three spirited days in December 2024, choirs from various educational institutions enthralled audiences with their captivating renditions of both familiar and original Christmas Carols. The Grand and runner-up prizes were judged by a panel of judges comprised of Dale Fubler, Michelle Doars and Tusha Stovell. 

The Grand Prize (senior school) of $5,000 was claimed by Bermuda Institute led by Musical Director, Owen Simos. The senior school choir’s soulful harmonies and enchanting performance captured the judges’ hearts, leaving an indelible mark on the event. Meanwhile, Northlands Primary School Choir, directed by Terry Henry, triumphed in the Grand Prize for the Primary School category, showcasing their incredible talent and dedication to musical excellence.

Additionally, Warwick Academy Middle School Choir, directed by Deanna Friesen showcased their musical prowess and secured the Runner-up prize, valued at $2,500, with an awe-inspiring presentation that mesmerized the audience.

The three winning schools, having nabbed over twelve thousand in prize money are now ineligible for the People’s Choice Award valued at $1,200. The Bermuda community now holds the power to crown their favorite performance by participating in the voting process.

To vote, follow these simple steps:

  1. Watch the individual performances of the choirs on Bernews.

  2. Visit Skyport’s Instagram page and select the post featuring the name of your favored school.

  3. Comment “YES” under the post representing your preferred choir.

The community is reminded to ensure their votes are registered before the deadline at 5:00 PM ADT on December 31, 2023. Nikki Fagan, Head of Brand Development and Communications at Skyport enthused, “Your support will contribute to recognizing the exceptional talent and hard work of these incredible young performers and their teachers. The cash award will help support development and expansion of the winning school’s musical programme.

The People’s Choice WInner will be announced in the New Year. Trophies and Prize Presentations will be presented to the winning schools before the end of January 2024.
