On Friday, March 7, Acting U.S. Consul General Vanja Vukota and Premier David Burt signed an agreement alongside His Excellency Andrew Murdoch and Minister Public Works Jache Adams that reinforces the close U.S.-Bermuda security partnership by improving enforcement against illicit activities and illegal fishing in Bermuda’s territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Negotiated by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Bermuda, the agreement allows Bermudian law enforcement officers to operate aboard U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) vessels, significantly improving enforcement against illicit activities and illegal fishing.
The agreement strengthens intelligence sharing and maritime domain awareness, bolstering efforts to counter illicit activities such as illegal migration, narcotics trafficking, and human smuggling.
