Under-14 Boys National Team Returns Home to a Hero’s Welcome

Bermuda’s Under-14 Boys National Team returned home to a hero’s welcome last night after an extraordinary performance in the 2024 Caribbean Football Union Boys U14 Challenge Series. Despite a heartbreaking 4-3 penalty loss in the finals, the team arrived home with their heads held high, having demonstrated remarkable talent and resilience throughout the tournament.

During the group stage, the young Gombey Warriors were unstoppable, securing four consecutive victories and a tournament total of 26 goals, the highest number of goals scored by any country. Their journey included dominant wins over Grenada and St. Maarten, as well as a hard-fought triumph over St. Lucia. Leading the charge were standout forwards Jeon Wolfe and Zydon Lightbourne Furbert, who were among the tournament’s top scorers.

Supporters, including family, friends, the Bermuda Football Association (BFA), and government officials, gathered at L.F. Wade International Airport to greet the team as they returned on the American Airlines flight. The Premier, the Hon. E. David Burt, along with the Hon. Owen K. Darrell, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, were present to welcome the team home and spoke to the significance of their achievement.

Minister Darrell stated, “We couldn’t be prouder of our Under-14 National Team. Their performance in this tournament has truly been inspiring. These young athletes have demonstrated what can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and a true love for the game. It’s essential for us as both a community and a government to stand behind our youth, celebrating not just their victories but also their challenges. Their journey throughout this tournament has brought us together, showcasing the unifying power of sport on our island.”

BFA President, Mark Wade added, “Reflecting on the remarkable accomplishments of these young players, it’s evident that Bermuda’s football future is full of promise. These boys have displayed not only their skills but also an admirable courage and resilience that lifts us all. Their journey exemplifies the incredible outcomes when talent is paired with determination. While we recognize there’s more work ahead, we take this moment to celebrate their achievement. We are deeply proud of them, their committed coaches, and the families who have supported them at every turn.”
