Two Seniors Living in a Van After Eviction, Appeal for Immediate Housing Support

It was back in June when TNN News first broke the story of two seniors being evicted from their Glebe Road residence in Pembroke. Now, two months later, their situation remains unchanged — and increasingly dire.

The couple, a 79-year-old woman and 71-year-old man, have been without permanent accommodation since the eviction. They are now living in their van, spending nights in a park in the central parish of Bermuda where they pitch a tent each evening before taking it down again in the morning.

With hurricane season upon us and the cooler months of November and December on the horizon, concern is growing for their safety and wellbeing.

TNN reached out to the man, Mr. Sidney Maxwell Haywood, who shared how he and his partner have been coping.

When asked if they had found housing since being put out, Mr. Haywood answered simply:

“Nowhere, nowhere at all. I’ve been Bermuda Housing Corporation BHC enough times and still nothing.”

The seniors were asked why they would not consider relocation to areas like St. David’s or Somerset. Mr. Haywood explained the difficulty:

“Bermuda’s small, but no transportation, yeah. It’s too far.”

Both continue to “work,” as he put it, they are still moving around and trying to maintain daily life despite their circumstances.

Mr. Haywood confirmed that his common-law wife is 79 years old while he himself is 71. Both are considered seniors under Bermuda law. Yet, according to him, no one from Government or BHC has reached out, despite the department having his contact number.

At present, the couple remain in their van, grateful for the warmer months, but aware that time is running out before the weather shifts.

“Thank God for the warmer months,” Mr. Haywood said. “But you’ve got cooler months coming up. We need accommodations ASAP.”

For those who wish to assist, Mr. Haywood can be reached directly at 516-7903.

TNN has also been in contact with local helping agencies that chooses to remain anonymous has committed to securing three months’ rent for the couple if suitable accommodations can be found. This would provide them immediate relief and they will help them manage their affairs moving forward.

TNN News has spoken with the Minister of Housing, the Hon. Zane DeSilva who is now aware of the situation and is making every effort to rectify this matter.

We are appealing to the Bermuda community: if you can assist in any way — with an accommodation, or support — please step forward. These two seniors deserve the dignity of a roof over their heads, especially as the colder season approaches.
