The first leg of the legendary Triple Crown fishing tournament, the Big Game Classic, is now less than one week away. However, according to Royal Bermuda Yacht Club dockmaster Reggie Horseman, the fishing World Cup, held throughout the globe, also takes place on July 4.
That tournament is for the largest Blue Marlin. “ 35 to 40 boats are expected to participate in this year’s Triple Crown, including eight boats from RBYC,” Mr. Horseman explained. “ P&W’s has about 12 or 13 and Princess has around the
same amount.”
The prize for the largest Marlin overall on July 4 can be up to one million dollars, but for the Triple Crown, prizes can range from $100 to $150 thousand.
“ We’ve had quite a few grand ones caught here,” he said. “ Bermuda used to be the hotspot for Marlins, but it’s mellowed down a little bit. Now it seems that Cape Verde is the Marlin hotspot,
but there are still some big Marlins in Bermuda.”
According to Mr. Horseman, Marlins weighing up to a thousand pounds have been caught in local waters, but in general, any fish over 700 pounds can put competitors in the running for
biggest catch.
The Billfish Blast will follow the Big Game Classic and the Seahorse tournament is the final competition in the Triple Crown.
