Sir John Swan was not just a former leader of Bermuda; he was a visionary, a mentor, a businessman, and a man who genuinely cared about the future of others.
I first met Sir John back in the 1980s when he operated the John W. Swan investment office on Victoria Street. I walked into his office with money that I was prepared to invest. After listening to me, Sir John offered advice that would stay with me for the rest of my life. Rather than investing in one of his opportunities, he encouraged me to purchase a house. At the time, I struggled with trust issues and was hesitant to take that step. Looking back today, not following that advice remains one of my greatest regrets. Once again, Sir John had the foresight to see what was best for my future.
Years later, around 2010, I had the opportunity to sit down with Sir John again. He had been a good friend of my father Toby Dillas and shared stories and insights about investments my father had made throughout his life. Those conversations deepened my appreciation for the wisdom, knowledge, and genuine concern Sir John had for the people around him.
In more recent years, Sir John became a mentor and advisor to my business, TNN Network. He offered guidance on many of the decisions and avenues that helped shape the organization into what it is today. Much of his contribution was done quietly, without seeking recognition or praise. He simply wanted to help. For that, I will always have the utmost respect and gratitude for him.
One of the greatest privileges of my professional career has been sitting down and interviewing Sir John over the past few years. Those conversations allowed me to witness firsthand the brilliance, determination, and leadership qualities that made him such a respected figure in Bermuda and beyond.
I also remember my early days at Bermuda Broadcasting Company when I accompanied others to the Premier’s Office while Sir John was serving as Premier. It was an experience that left a lasting impression on me and demonstrated the high standards and professionalism he expected from those around him.
Sir John embodied accomplishment, leadership, tenacity, and extraordinary business sense. He understood how to build opportunities, create prosperity, and inspire others to believe in what was possible. His influence extended far beyond politics and business. He touched countless lives through his mentorship, generosity, and willingness to share his wisdom.
I would also like to extend my heartfelt condolences and gratitude to his family—his children, Alison, Renee, and Nicholas Swan—and to Susie Aurruda for her support and contributions throughout the years.
If it were not for Sir John’s guidance and support, TNN Network would not be where it is today. His fingerprints are on much of the success we have achieved, even if many people never knew it.
Today, I publicly thank Sir John Swan for everything he has done for Bermuda, for its people, for my family, and for me personally. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Bermudians to dream bigger, work harder, and lead with courage.
Sir John, may you forever rest in eternal peace. Bermuda is a better place because of your vision, your service, your leadership, and your unwavering commitment to this country.
With love, respect, and gratitude, thank you for everything.
Your legacy will never be forgotten.
