TNN News Response to Commissioner Darren Simons’ Statement

Last evening, TNN News acknowledges the public statement made by Commissioner of Police Darren Simons in reference to our report issued yesterday morning concerning the discovery of Jeremiah Tyrell — an individual sought by police since May 1st.

TNN News stands firmly by the facts presented in our original story.

Our report stated that Jeremiah Tyrell was discovered on the property / estate of the Commissioner of Police — specifically on a property connected to the Commissioner and a relative. At no point did TNN News suggest, imply, or infer that Commissioner Simons was harboring the individual, had any prior knowledge of his presence, or assisted in concealing him in any way.

Those words were never written, said, or insinuated in any portion of our coverage.

What was reported — and what remains fact — is that the individual was discovered in an abandoned lot located on the Commissioner’s estate, within a few hundred yards of the Commissioners residence.

TNN News will clarify the one word change in the previous story was the word “Estate and Property”  In general, an “estate” refers to all of a person’s assets, including property, … Two words with the same meaning.

As members of the media, our responsibility is to report the truth based on verified information. We maintain that the information presented in our initial story was accurate and responsibly reported.

The question still remains is:

• Why didn’t the Commissioner proactively disclose the property connection when the arrest was made?

• Why wasn’t a statement released immediately to address concerns of conflict of interest, transparency, and accountability?

• And most importantly—who will be held accountable for harboring a fugitive on such a sensitive property?

TNN News will continue to report on this developing matter with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the public’s right to be informed.

Below is the response of the Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons.

I am simply not connected in any way to the harboring or care of the recently arrested man. While it is true that the property where he was found belongs to my family, I had no involvement in his presence there.

The original TNN report falsely claimed that I reside on the premises. That is untrue. The property in question is separate, over grown, undeveloped, land that has been in the family for generations.

I do not live there nor do I frequent the property. Once informed of this fact, the report was revised to claim that I reside “on the estate” clearly intended to preserve a misleading narrative. I do not reside at that property.

This investigation continues to be handled by serious crime officers, who have complete operational independence to investigate any and all circumstances of the suspect’s arrest. And I do not wish to compromise this serious ongoing investigation. However, I cannot allow baseless insinuations, that harm public confidence in the police to go unanswered.
