TNN News is standing firmly by its reporting regarding the operational status of public CCTV cameras located outside the Southampton Rangers Sports Club, despite statements made yesterday by the Minister of National Security.
Last week, TNN News reported that two government-operated CCTV security cameras mounted outside the Southampton Rangers Sports Club grounds—one facing South Shore Road and the other facing Horseshoe Road—were not operational and had been experiencing ongoing issues.
In an official statement issued yesterday, the Minister of National Security sought to address what he described as inaccurate reporting concerning the CCTV Surveillance System after a firearm incident that occurred at Southampton Rangers on May 25.
“Firstly, I want to address something directly. There has been incorrect reporting about the firearm incident at Southampton Rangers on May 25th. The public CCTV network was operational during that incident. That event was captured. The footage has been secured as forensic evidence and has already assisted with the investigation, resulting in arrests,” the Minister stated.
However, TNN News maintains that its original report was accurate and based on information provided by a reliable source.
Furthermore, TNN News has received credible information indicating that a $50,000 government grant has been approved specifically to address and rectify issues involving the CCTV cameras located outside the Southampton Rangers grounds. TNN News contends that the approval of funding to repair or upgrade the cameras raises serious questions regarding their operational status.
The news organization asserts that its report focused specifically on the cameras mounted outside the sports club grounds and not on the broader CCTV network referenced by the Minister.
As such, TNN News is calling on the Minister of National Security to publicly clarify the status of the specific cameras identified in its report and to acknowledge whether those cameras are, in fact, currently out of service or experiencing operational deficiencies.
TNN News also questioned what was the vetting process for other companies that was looking to be a part of the bidding process to securing the contract for the system. How did Digicel win the bidding process and contract.
TNN News is seeking a timely response from the Minister and remains committed to reporting accurately and transparently on matters of public interest and public safety.
