The Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda Awards $12,000 in Scholarships

Every year, The Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda (HAB) presents education scholarships to some of its senior candy stripers.

This year four awards totalling $12,000 went to the following:

• Mishale Corday $5,000 – Howard University, USA – Clinical Laboratory Science Program

• Gabriele Young $2,500 – University of Lethbridge, Canada – Bachelor of Management

• Sascha Burchall $2,500 – Sheridan College, Canada – Bachelor of Health Sciences, Kinesiology and Health Promotion

• Sierra DeSousa $2,000 University of Leeds, UK – Criminology and Criminal Justice

Additionally, candy stripers Adasia Trott and Arianna Smith were presented with special financial awards in recognition of their outstanding commitment to the program during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Mishale Corday is our top recipient being awarded $5,000,” said HAB President, Pat Cerra. “She has been registered in our program for 4 years and has contributed 112 hours of community service.

Impressively, she completed most of those hours during the COVID-19
pandemic. “She is pursuing a nursing degree at Howard University. Her interest in the medical field was piqued when the global shortage of healthcare professionals impacted her as a 12-year- old in Toronto, Canada.

“Mishale says nursing is only the start of her education journey. Ultimately, her plans are to be a doctor in the field of neurology. She intends to return to Bermuda upon attainting her nursing degree to gain experience in healthcare while applying to medical school.

“We wish Mishale, Gabriel, Sascha and Sierra every success in their studies,” he added. The HAB awards scholarships annually. Any candy striper enrolled in the programme at the time of application, who has completed a minimum of two years, is eligible.

Scholarships may be used for studies in Bermuda or overseas. Scholarships must be applied to the cost of education only, e.g. tuition, books and school fees.

There are currently 93 candy stripers enrolled in the HAB program. The HAB takes in approximately, 40 students annually. Interested young men and women can apply in writing. Applicants must apply before their 14th birthday. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a volunteer email jane.wright@bhb.bm
