The Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosts first annual Delta Days

On Friday, May 17th, 2024, the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter (BAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated held its first Delta Days event at the House of Assembly.

Delta Days was instituted by the organization’s grand chapter in Washington, D.C., to encourage members to actively participate in the public law and policy-making process. The Bermuda event was successful, bringing together sorority
members, lawmakers, and community advocates to increase the attendees’ understanding of the democratic process and celebrate the importance of civic engagement.

The event is aligned with the organization’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement.

Shawnette Smith, President of The Bermuda Alumnae Chapter, states, “The members of the Bermuda Chapter are dedicated to promoting social action, community engagement, and empowering individuals to create lasting change.
Delta Days in Bermuda represents an important step in fulfilling our mission. It will also allow the organization to gain a deeper understanding of the steps necessary to drive change on issues impacting Bermuda.”

“We are incredibly proud of the discussions that took place during our first Annual Delta Days,” adds Alexa Lightbourne, Co-Chair of the Social Action Committee. “As a public service organization, it is important that we educate ourselves about the intricate processes of the legislature.”

Delta Days is also aligned with the organization’s The Power of One campaign, which highlights members who were trailblazers in Bermuda. Notable members and activists include Mrs. Georgine Hill, Dame Marjorie Bean, DBE, Mrs.
Reber Connie Williams, and Mrs. Louise Jackson, OBE, JP who have been celebrated on the organization’s social media platforms for their remarkable contributions and achievements.
