The 13th Annual Open Your Heart Foundation Boxing Day Extravaganza

On a brisk Saturday at the Somerset Cricket Club grounds, the Open Your Heart Foundation celebrated its 13th Annual Boxing Day Extravaganza. Originally scheduled for Boxing Day, inclement weather had forced a slight delay.

However, the rescheduled event brought together a lively crowd, showcasing the organization’s enduring commitment to community and giving back.

“THE SHOW MUST GO ON”

Speaking with the foundation’s spokespersons, Debrina Simons and Galvet Black, it was clear that community spirit was at the heart of the event. Ms. Simons remarked, “The weather may have postponed us, but it could never dampen our mission. Every year, this extravaganza is a celebration of community, from west to east.”

Ms. Black emphasized the importance of the foundation’s roots, explaining how a small gathering of friends transformed into an organization dedicated to uplifting the neighborhood. “We wanted to change the narrative,” she said. “Open Your Heart is about more than just our annual events. It’s about showing up for the community every single day.”

A LEGACY OF GIVING

The foundation’s impact reaches far beyond its flagship events. Through programs supporting youth, seniors, and families, Open Your Heart has become a cornerstone of support for many. Ms. Black shared, “I personally visit our seniors regularly to understand their needs. For 2025, we’re expanding our initiatives to ensure no one feels left behind.”

The extravaganza itself was a vibrant affair, with children enjoying activities from face painting to fun castles, all in a safe and joyful environment. Ms. Simons noted, “Seeing families come together here is the essence of what we do. The youth are our future, and we’re planting seeds today for a brighter tomorrow.”

A MESSAGE TO BERMUDA

As 2024 comes to a close, both spokespersons shared heartfelt reflections and hopes for the new year. Ms. Black urged Bermudians to reconnect with their roots: “Let’s bring back the unity and love of the old Bermuda, with a modern twist. A kind word, a simple act of listening—these can make all the difference.”

Ms. Simons added, “We never know what someone else is going through. Be the reason someone smiles. It doesn’t take much, just an open heart.”

A SPECIAL THANHS TO SPONSORS

The event’s success would not have been possible without its sponsors, including Somerset Cricket Club, BGA, Barrett’s, Sun Life Financial, and many others. Both Simons and Black expressed deep gratitude for the businesses and individuals who continue to support the foundation’s mission.

LOOKING AHEAD

As the extravaganza came to a close, the Open Your Heart Foundation left attendees with a simple but powerful message: “Love more, give more, and always put good first.” With plans to expand their programs and deepen their impact, the foundation is poised to make 2025 a year of even greater service and community connection.

Happy New Year, Bermuda—here’s to brighter days ahead!
